Easy and low carb skillet Philly cheese steak is perfect when you are watching what you eat as it is low in carbs. It also offers easy cleanup and helps keep the house cool with a quick cooking time in the oven.

Just like our sheet pan meals for STEAK and CHICKEN, this is very easy to make and the secret to all of the flavor is the sauce we make from scratch to go with it. Fresh on another level here folks!

Ingredients

Lots of colorful peppers, inexpensive cuts of beef and a delicious sauce made with pantry staples are all you need to whip up this one pan wonder.

A serving of beef, bell peppers, and onions, topped with melted cheese, presented on a white plate with a fork, beside a cast iron skillet on a wooden table.
  • Sliced Beef – we use an inexpensive but tender cut like chuck eye steak for this cut into small chunks.
  • Red Onion – color and flavor, we chop these so they cook down and melt into the recipe.
  • Orange, Red and Yellow Bell Peppers – we slice these to keep them like ribbons in the same fashion you’d find on a Philly steak sandwich.
  • Minced Fresh garlic – you can mince your own or hydrate some dried for a punch of flavor.
  • Grated fresh ginger – adds sweetness and more health benefits to the dish while not being strong on flavor.
  • Soy sauce – we like the lower sodium variety to add flavor without adding so much salt.
  • Worcestershire sauce – that dark, rich flavor just goes great with beef and helps add flavor without so much salt too!
  • Ketchup – a good thick tomato base that almost everyone has in their home! We do recommend finding a great low or no sugar option.
  • Sliced provolone cheese – this is generally easy to find where you will find your sliced cheeses in your local grocery. Provolone is the classic Philly steak cheese.

  • Bell Peppers – any color will work!

🍴 PRO TIP!

Be sure not to cook your beef all the way through in the beginning. A good sear on the outer sides of the beef will help keep it tender. The beef will end up having a warm pink center once completely done. Remember, it will also have a cook time in the oven as well!

🗹 RECIPE FAQ’S

Can I make this on a griddle or flat top?

All of the meat, onions and peppers can be browned on a griddle or flat top. That will certainly help your cook time. It can also be done in advance and simply mix the sauce and add the protein and veggies and cook as normal.

How can I serve it?

This recipe is great because it can be served “as is” for those watching their sugar or carbs. You can also have great bread options for those who are not. This would be perfect on a toasted hoagie roll!

What if I can’t find provolone?

Any sliced cheese will work. Provolone is the classic, next to cheez whiz, but we are trying to be health conscious so if you wanted to keep things that way, use sliced mozzarella. It is naturally low fat so its good for this recipe.
