Sweet Vidalia Onion Dressing is a celebration of our sister state, Georgia’s most famous produce. These sweet southern onions have proven to be a favorite among many and have found many uses. Here we highlight it in a sweet and tangy dressing.

We love to take a dressing and change it up. Just like for our beautiful BACON CORNBREAD SALAD and our HOMEMADE CHICKEN SALAD, we show you ways to use non traditional things for staple dressings or sauces.

Let’s not waste any more of your time, let’s show you how to make it!

Ingredients

Simple, staple ingredients for this one. A good blender or an immersion blender is a plus too! You can really get those onions down to that sweet nectar with one.

ingredients for sweet onion dressing
  • 1 Vidalia Onion, peeled and quartered
  • Honey
  • Creole mustard or Spicy Brown Mustard
  • canola oil
  • coarse ground salt and black pepper, to taste

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Here is where the magic happens!

adding onions to a good blender

Place the Onion, Honey and Mustard in a blender or a large bowl that your immersion blender can fit in.

adding good honey
adding spicy creole mustard

Blend until combined. I use the pulse function for this to help things along slowly. Turning the machine on, I then drizzle the oil in a steady stream until the dressing thickens and is emulsified.

At this point, add in a bit of salt and pepper. Start small and mix to combine. Taste and adjust as necessary.

Hint: If you find yourself in need of a really good blender that can make sauces and soups, we love our So Much More Than Salad Dressing

I love recipes like this one where what we make is multi-purpose. This is not only a great dressing for salad, you can use it a ton of other ways too!

Storage

This dressing will stay good in the refrigerator for up to two weeks! If it lasts that long! We like to keep ours in a good old mason jar. Sometimes when I am setting a fancy table and serve it, I will funnel it into a nice oil decanter.

Why Brooke loves this recipe!

Recipes are like antiques. They are meant to be handed down from one generation to another. Each one holding a special memory or nostalgic memory. Here is why we love this one!

Logo for "The Buttered Home" featuring a butter churn in the center enclosed by a circular design. The text "EST 2018" is on either side of the churn. Below the circle, the text reads "THE BUTTERED HOME" with the tagline "home cooking made easy" underneath.

What I like about recipes like this is you can take this and expand on it. Wouldn’t a red onion dressing be good too? if you like spicy, you can add red pepper flakes and use the red onion to make a completely different dressing.

Tips and Tricks

What if I want it a bit thicker?

That is easy, if you want it more like a dipping sauce add a bit of xanthan gum and it should thicken right up without changing the flavor.

What if I don’t have a blender?

A food processor or an immersion blender will work great. Good cooking tools don’t have to cost a lot of money but some specialty items are necessary if you are needing to make recipes like dressings and some sauces and are a great investment.

How do I store it?

I like to keep it in a closed mason jar in the refrigerator. It should last about two weeks. Keeping it cold and sitting still, you may need to give it a shake before you use it.
