Storage

Once cooled, you can store this baked juicy chicken in the fridge for 3-4 days. Make sure to store it in an airtight container.

You’ll want to reheat it in the oven at 350F until warmed through. This will help bring back a bit of its somewhat crispy, sticky texture. However, know that the sauce does thicken up a bit when stored.

This isn’t a recipe I would suggest freezing as the batter doesn’t hold up as well when it thaws.

🗹 RECIPE FAQ’S

Tips and Tricks

Can I make chicken with honey sauce with chicken breasts instead of thighs?

You can make this recipe with chicken breasts, however, know that cooking times will vary. Chicken breasts have a faster cooking time and tend to dry out easier. If using chicken breasts, I would butterfly the breasts first before coating them so that they cook quickly but also so that more of the chicken has a delicious crispy shell. This recipe can also work with chicken strips or chicken legs. Adjust the cooking time for each so that the internal temperature reaches 165F.

What’s the trick to getting crispy chicken?

Make sure that your chicken is dry before you coat it in buttermilk. This ensures that the buttermilk isn’t watered down any, and the flour mixture will stick to it well.

What do you serve with baked chicken thighs?

Any side dish will pair well with these garlic-based sticky chicken thighs. Traditional green beans, carrots, brown rice, sesame noodles, or scalloped potatoes are all delicious side dishes.

Is it better to bake chicken at 350F or 400F?

To keep chicken from drying out, bake it at 350F. Know that chicken thighs will take longer than chicken breasts to cook. Baking the chicken at 350F ensures it comes out juicy on the inside.

Why do you coat chicken in buttermilk?

Tossing the chicken thighs in buttermilk makes it so that the thighs come out extremely tender. The acidity in buttermilk helps to break down the proteins in the chicken and the result is a tender, juicy piece of meat with every bite.

How can I add new flavors to the sticky honey chicken recipe?

You can vary this chicken by adding more spice like red pepper flakes, a special kind of honey (like turmeric honey), chili sauce, or something like fresh ginger grated into the sauce. Small additions can make ordinary chicken transform easily enough the next time you make it.
