Crock Pot Southern Black Eyed Peas
The Southern symbol of luck and prosperity in the coming year, our CROCK POT SOUTHERN BLACK EYED PEAS recipe makes this dried bean recipe a cinch to make. We season them up with onions, jalapeños, bacon and cajun seasoning for the complete Southern food experience.

The South has many traditions. Our New Year’s Day meal game is strong! We always have some form of pork for prosperity, greens for good fortune and black eyed peas are a must for good luck! You will find some variation of these foods at any Southern table on New Year’s Day.

Ingredients
Black eyed peas can be kind of a pill to work with. When making authentic southern ones, you need to use the dried ones for the best outcome. Having to soak them overnight is no full at all. So this recipe, by using the crock pot, does not require it! Yippee!

Instructions
As with most crock pot recipes, this really is a dump and cook kind of thing. However, to get the most flavor we do brown our peppers, onions, garlic and cook our bacon ahead of time.

In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil, chopped bacon, onion, jalapeño peppers and minced garlic.

Cook 8 to 10 minutes until onions and peppers have softened and bacon has cooked off most of its fat and is browned.

In the liner of the crock pot, add dried black eyed peas.

Pour in 2 cups of chicken broth.

Add in 2 cups of beef broth.

And a whole can of diced tomatoes, undrained.

Season with black pepper, oregano and cajun seasoning.

Pour in the onion and bacon mixture, pan drippings and all.

Mix well to combine.

Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 6. Test to make sure black eyed peas are done.

Variations and Substitutions
Black eyed peas can be sort of bland. We worked hard to develop a recipe that is how my Nannie and Aunt Peggy would have made them. Full of flavor! It doesn’t stop here! We have more ideas that would make this recipe great too!
- OTHER VEGGIES – for added flavor and texture consider adding hot peppers, bell peppers or other great textures.
- SEASONINGS– seasoned salt, thyme and even nutmeg can all be added to change the base flavors of the beans. If you wanted them a little sweet, a bit of brown sugar is also very good!
- BROTH AND PROTEIN– we like what the combo of chicken and beef broth does but using 4 cups of one is fine too or even a veggie broth. The sky is the limit on the protein you can add. Smoked ham hocks or turkey legs make all kinds of dishes delicious and add a smokiness to the dish. You can do one or the other or with the bacon, too much is never too much!

How to Make ahead and Store It
Crock pot cooking means once cooking is done you can cool it and store it in the fridge for a day or two. Reheat in the crock pot on warm or low setting until heated through. This makes it a great make ahead side dish. Once cooked, cool and store in an airtight container for up to a week.
To freeze, cook as normal, cool and place in a freezer safe container and should keep in the freezer for a couple of months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat on low or warm in the crock pot.

Crock Pot Southern Black Eyed Peas
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1/2 package bacon chopped
- 2/3 cup onion chopped
- 2 jalapeno peppers seeded and chopped
- 2 tablespoons garlic fresh, minced
- 2 cups dried black eyed peas
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 can diced tomatoes undrained
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon cajun seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil. Brown onions, jalapeños, bacon and minced garlic over low to medium heat 8 to 10 minutes. Just until veggies are soft and fat has cooked out of bacon. Set aside.1 teaspoon olive oil, 1/2 package bacon, 2/3 cup onion, 2 jalapeno peppers, 2 tablespoons garlic
- In the liner of a crock pot, add the black eyed peas, chicken broth, beef broth and diced tomatoes. Season with oregano, black pepper and cajun seasoning. - Pour in bacon and onion mixture, drippings and all. Mix well. Place the lid on and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 5 to 6. Just until black eyed peas reach your desired done-ness.

To get your greens AND your lucky black eyed peas, during the last hour of cooking, add in canned or fresh collard or turnip greens for a super combination!
🗹 RECIPE FAQ’S
Once cooking is complete, take out 1/2 cup to a cup and mash with a potato masher. Mix back in with whole beans for a creamier serving.
Nope! I always say, slow cook instead of soaking. Harnessing the power of your crock pot makes so many dried bean dishes easier so that you don’t have to plan that far ahead when you want them!
You can but there will be no need to slow cook them as they are already cooked when canned. If you wanted, you could cook with all of the other additions in a saucepan over medium heat for 20 minutes until the flavors come together.
