There are two recipes that I learned to cook as a young girl. One was monkey bread and the other was dump cake! I’ll never forget the first time I made it! I really thought I had done something, and it was very low-effort! I still love them, and this one is an amazing, fancy, grown-up dump cake that I know you will adore!

If you want to use something other than canned lemon filling, check out our PRESSURE COOKER LEMON CURD recipe!

Why Brooke loves this recipe!

Recipes are like antiques. They are meant to be handed down from one generation to another. Each one holding a special memory or nostalgic memory. Here is why we love this one!

Logo for "The Buttered Home" featuring a butter churn in the center enclosed by a circular design. The text "EST 2018" is on either side of the churn. Below the circle, the text reads "THE BUTTERED HOME" with the tagline "home cooking made easy" underneath.

It looks like a traditional dump cake, except we have it sandwiched between two layers of yummy crumble! It still has that nostalgic flavor just like I remember from my childhood dump cakes . . . but times TEN! The addition of the buttered crumble on the top and bottom, as well as the cream cheese, just takes it to a whole new level!

Substitutions & Variations

With this recipe, here are a few good customizations to help get you going.

Lemon cream – Instead of the canned lemon cream, you can use your favorite recipe for making your own in a pressure cooker or Instant Pot.
Strawberries –  In place of canned strawberries you can macerate fresh strawberries in sugar or a sugar substitute.
Cake mix – We love the yellow cake mix in this recipe, but you could try a richer chocolate cake mix or butter pecan mix. It’s an easy way to change this dump cake up!

Notes

*PRO TIP* – put lemon cream cheese filling on top of the cake mix/butter mixture by the spoonful in order to spread more easily.
Two slices of crumb-topped fruit bars with a red and yellow filling are stacked on a patterned plate, with a baking dish and blue towel in the background. The bars have a crumbly texture and are slightly oozing filling.

🍴 PRO TIP!

I like to dollop on my crumble mixture in sections so that I don’t pick up lots of that crumble when we spread things out with my spatula. It only needs to be in a somewhat even layer. Just lay it back down, if it picks up some crumble. One of the things that people don’t love about cooking is that they think things have to be perfect. They don’t! It’s a dump cake, so don’t stress!

🗹 RECIPE FAQ’S

Why is this called a dump cake?

The name came about because you simply dump all the ingredients in and bake it!

What goes well with dump cake?

Try a little vanilla ice cream with it when it’s warm! Yum! And a big cup of coffee alongside the dump cake is hard to beat!

Can I scale this recipe up for a larger group?

Certainly! Just use a larger baking dish, and if you double the recipe, be sure keep your layers even and give it a little extra time to bake for that center to get cooked.
