Shrimp made Spicy and easy!
I have a hard time deciding which is my favorite Summer Food activity. Barbecue? Shrimp Boil? A perfect summer party would incorporate both in my book. So, if you are like me and don't want to have to decide, combine both and make a delicious dish of this shrimp. Serve it with your favorite BBQ sides like these BBQ Baked Beans or Easy New Potato Salad and you can have a Shrimp Boil BBQ any time of the week!
How to make BBQ Shrimp
There is just something about making BBQ shrimp with ingredients that you put together to make a perfect sauce. Sure, you could buy a store bought sauce but in my opinion, it just wouldn't be the same. The Shrimp should be the star. The sauce should be something that gives the shrimp flavor. Not that covers it up. So here is how you can do that!
~Ingredients~
- ½ cup butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon creole seasoning
- 4 oz beer
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 -2 pounds raw or frozen large shrimp, in shells with tails
- 2 tablespoons hot sauce
- 1 cup sliced green onions
~Method~
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. In a large skillet or saucepan, melt butter and olive oil. Add lemon juice, garlic, salt, pepper, onion powder, creole seasoning, beer, Worcestershire and hot sauce. Cook on medium heat and bring just to a boil. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Arrange thawed or raw shrimp in a single layer in a large baking dish. Pour butter sauce over shrimp and sprinkle with green onions.
- Bake 15 minutes turning half way through cooking time. Serve right away.
Tips and Tricks
Fresh is ALWAYS better! If you can get your hands on some fresh gulf shrimp, they are the bees knees! Frozen are ok. I have a strict rule that we only use frozen from December to April. Fresh are easy to come by here in south central Alabama. If you find you are having a hard time getting good fresh at a reasonable price, go for the bag of frozen. Read your labels though!
Creole Seasoning. There are so many to choose from. Most cooks have a favorite. If you find yourself lost on which one to choose, here are a couple that I recommend. Slap ya Mama and Tony Chacere are always on my go to list. You should be able to find them both on Amazon or with a simple google search if not available in your local store.
Beer. One of the things I like about this recipe is the versatility of the depth of flavor you can create by using different types of beer. I like using a light beer just to give the sauce a hint of earthiness. However, if you wanted a deeper, more complex flavor, use a darker, stronger beer.
Why We Love It!
While we love recipes that simply get you cooking, recipes like this one are really no different. Yes, its specific. Yes, it has a good many ingredients that aren't always interchangeable. I think though what it does is gets you experimenting with more complex ingredients. For example, the way the beer changes the flavor according to what type of beer you use. Knowing how this effects the outcome makes you a more experimental cook. That is what we aim for here at The Buttered Home.
