Homemade Hand Pies made simple.

Homemade Hand Pies are a southern classic recipe. Many people love them and they are often a nostalgic food. One of my own favorite childhood memories is when my Momma would make fried apple pies or chocolate pies. It was her mother, my grandmothers recipe.

Hand Pies made without frying.

While I love the taste and crispiness of the fried pie, in my older, wiser years I wanted to make it a tad healthier. Baking was my answer. Much like our other healthiER recipes like, BANANA ICE CREAM, LOW CARB PIZZA CASSEROLE and our NO SUGAR ADDED OATMEAL COOKIES, we like using better for you swaps and cooking methods to lighten things up.

For this classic favorite we use the same pie crust recipe and bake it at a slightly higher temperature, gave me a crispy, flaky crust that sure rivals the fried crust. Try it for yourself!

Tips and Tricks

Can I use store bought pie crust?

You certainly can. These easy hand pies are a cinch to make and if you take a great little short cut like a store bought pie crust, you get to have them that much faster.

Can I fry them?

You can. Heat about 3 cups of a normal oil like vegetable or canola to 375 degrees. Fry the hand pies until they are crispy and brown. About 3 to 4 minutes. Make sure you keep an eye on the oil temp to maintain 375 so hand pies will not be greasy. Drain and cool and enjoy.

How can I keep the pies from leaking?

Mine always leak. Usually it is because I am in a hurry and tend to overfill them. They are good either way but if the leakage concerns you, make sure you do not over fill them and make sure the edges are sealed very well. A good brushing of the egg wash there also helps further seal the edges.

Can these be a savory pie as well?

Yes, this pie dough isn’t sweet and is a good compliment to sweet or savory hand pies. Get creative and use this same recipe and method for anything you can dream of.

I made up a batch of these initially for my kids after school snacks but the hubby didn’t let them last that long lol. I used an apple pie filling the first time and my second batch I used a blueberry filling. Both flavors were a huge hit and have been requested again!

Brenda Gantt rubs a little water around the edges before she folds them over and crimps them. This seems to keep them from losing their filling at all. I still haven’t tried them, but she makes them all the time for her Cottle House BNB and they look amazing. I’ll have to try baking them too! Thanks for the wonderful recipes!

This is the easiest recipe by far that I have found. Looking at a lot of them and I need simplicity in recipes. So thank you
