Tips and Tricks
Whole or full fat milk works best. You could even use half and half or whipping cream for a good result. I am a proponent of using what you have though and have found almond milk or even low fat milk work just as good.
The top should be firm, only slightly wet. You should see a cake like top. Some runniness is normal as that is the u0022lavau0022 from the pudding and chocolate chips.
After this reaches room temperature it should keep in an airtight container for up to a week. You can refrigerate if your kitchen is warm, otherwise it should be good on the counter.

What is the best way to cut down on the strong chocolate and much too sweetness of this? Maybe eliminate all or half of the chocolate chips and half of the pudding? It is just way too strong and sweet forms taste, but I like some of the goey texture. I don’t like sugary frosting or glazes on cakes or any baked goods, but don’t care for dry or crispy, either. Moist and delicately sweet are my preferred levels of desert flavors. Please recommend how to adjust this over the top recipe for me. Thank you.
So, by using the Devils Food cake mix, it really is NOT an over the top sweet dessert. The chocolate chips help make the “lava”. You Certainly could cut down on them or use a lower sugar option like lily’s. Same with the pudding, use a lower sugar option. Truly, it is a sweet dessert, however because of the devils food, it is more of a bittersweet option and not sugary sweet. The cake is moist and nothing on it is reminiscent of a glaze. I would say try it as is to determine if another dessert may be better suited for what you are looking for.
You can substitute the cake mix for any other cake mix, the pudding for any flavor pudding, and the chocolate chips for any kind of baking chips or add-in. Substituting these three items allows for a ton of spin offs from the delicious original chocolate lava dessert!! One of my favorites is an Oreo version … I do dark chocolate cake mix, Oreo pudding, and half and half on white and dark/chocolate chips. I’ve done strawberry, caramel, Reese’s, and even a carrot cake with cream cheese chips!! Having said that, nearly everyone that I make this dessert for votes the original to be #1 ;). Hope that gives you some ideas!!
I LOVE those options! We love to get your wheels turning and your spin on our recipes is one of our favorite things! Thanks so much!
Carrot cake and cream cheese chips. Fantastic idea. Oh what about a lemon cake with vanilla or lemon pudding white choc chip and serve with citrus sorbet??
What absolute heaven! This was the chocolatey sweet treat I needed this weekend. And since it made enough to share, my family got to have some, too. lol I love that I can was able to throw in dark chocolate chips, since that’s what I had in the pantry. The recipe was quick and easy to put together. and that cake got rave reviews around the table. Thanks for sharing your recipe!
Thanks Glenda! So glad you all enjoyed this delicious and easy recipe!
Sorry for the second comment, but I already hit publish. I’m curious if you think I could use butterscotch pudding and butterscotch chips for the lava. Or vanilla pudding with white chocolate chips?
OOOhhhh! Yes! All of that sounds PERFECT!!!
Oh goodness this sounds so amazing! I love starting with a box of cake mix to make something wonderful! I am all about the chocolate-chocolate-chocolate combo but I happen to have a box of cheesecake pudding in my pantry right now that needs to be used. I think using that with Devil’s Food Cake might be just the perfect mix! I have every flavor of chocolate chip here – would you recommend white chocolate chips for this?
Thanks so much! Yes! White chocolate work just fine!! They disappear!
Um, I am in love. This was so spectacularly delicious! The texture was perfect, too. Thank you so much for this recipe!
Do you think leftovers would freeze well? Thanks!
I would be cautious with freezing cake of any kind. Freezing tends to dry cakes out. If you do, I would double bag and wrap to insure it stays moist.
It was so good, I will make it again
Thank you so much!
This worked so well and was delicious!
Thanks! This makes my day! So glad you enjoyed it!
Super easy. Super good. Love it. Thank you!
