Sweet Potato Pie

I love all things Fall. Fall produce being one of my favorites. It also is no secret that I love sweet potatoes. I try to find every way under the sun to cook them.

I get this trait honest. My sweet Grandaddy, Joe Calvin, aka, Daddy Joe had a huge sweet tooth and favored sweet potatoes.

He also loved my Nannie’s cooking. Every Fall, he would anxiously look forward to her Sweet Potato pies. Just like a little kid.

I remember asking him one year at Thanksgiving, “Daddy Joe” why don’t we eat pumpkin pie? Like the pilgrims?” He told me quickly that back then, that is all they had to work with. That nothing beat sweet potato pie. Namely, My Nannie’s! To this day, I, like him, prefer sweet potato pie to pumpkin.

Lots of folk like to use sweet potato pie filling. That is fine, I ain’t knocking it. I’ve been known when in a pinch to do just that.

However, it really is just as easy to make it with real sweet potatoes. I challenge you to do that just once. You will sure taste the difference. You can even cook your sweet potatoes in the crock pot! Find that recipe HERE.

Hi Brooke! My family loves sweet potatoes, but Iโ€™ve never tried making a pie with them. Your recipe looks easy, however my son is allergic to dairy. Do you know of an almond milk or another non-dairy substitute for the condensed milk? Thank you for any ideas you have.

    1. Yes, you can get coconut condensed milk in most baking sections. Just check the label and make sure it is dairy free because I am just not sure. There may be almond or soy options now too, just make sure you are in the specialty section of the market.
