As you take the first bite, you’ll experience the satisfying texture of a beautifully browned outside, giving way to a tender, moist interior packed with the distinct sweetness of apples.
The grated apple inside the dough adds a hint of fruitiness, while the apple slices on top provide a burst of flavor and an appealing touch. Combined with the warm spices of cinnamon and nutmeg, each bite is a happy dance of textures and tastes, leaving you wanting the whole pan for yourself.
We really up the game by adding a finishing touch of a cinnamon-vanilla glaze. This warm glaze drizzled over the golden-browned biscuits elevates their taste with a creamy, sweet, and slightly spiced essence.

How to Make them
For delicious fresh apple biscuits, you don’t need any special ingredients or tools. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Wash and peel the apple. Slice some thin slices and reserve to put on top of biscuits.
In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of self rising flour, 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg. Mix to combine.
Grate or cube your cold butter and add in the dry ingredients. Mix well to incorporate the butter throughout. Grate the remainder of the apple. After grating, you should have 1/4 to 1/2 cup. Add to biscuit mixture and mix well.
Add buttermilk about a half a cup at a time until a soft, shaggy dough forms. Do not over mix. Turn out onto a floured surface and form a mound of dough.
Pat flat into a rectangular shape. Turn each end over the middle and then fold in half.
Pat flat again and repeat the layering two more times. Ending with patting out flat to about 1 to 1.5 inches thick. Use a biscuit cutter to cut your biscuits and use your fingers to shape and form them into nice, tall biscuits.

Did you say “Grandbaby”? Dang, I thought you were maybe in your early 30’s! I’m a geezer (77), but those must surely be old pictures of you?
LOL, 77 is not old! Thank you! I am 50, these pictures were taken in the last couple of years.
Thanks for the tip of sealing it in an airtight container. I made it and was worried it won’t be crunchy/crispy once I bring it for work. Thankful for your tip I was able to eat it at work and shared it with my colleagues and they said it tastes so delicious!
Thank you!
I made these amazing fresh apple biscuits over the weekend, but substituted plant-based butter, homemade vegan buttermilk, and plant-based half-and-half due to a food allergy. The technique you shared for layering the dough worked wonders. In fact, I can’t wait to try it the next time I make regular old buttermilk biscuits!
Thank you!
